With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today .

Quick: Name your top three favorite Austrian eats. Errr...schnitzel? Um...does beer count? If you are curious about Austrian cuisine, an expat, or an expert, BierBeisl, a new restaurant opening up promises to be "the first and only Authentic Austrian restaurant in Los Angeles."Former Patina Restaurant Chef de Cuisine Bernhard Mairinger is the young (he's 27) mind and culinary force behind BierBeisl, and the menu, we're told, will feature Mairinger’s modern interpretation of traditional Austrian fare using ingredients made exclusively for the restaurant and/or imported from Austria. Yes, that means schnitzel...and more.

The restaurant will offer Sausage & Beer tastings, where the meats are paired with fine Austrian brews. You can dine at the "Stammtisch," which is a communal table and Austrian dining tradition and a chance to not just make new friends, but get special treats from the chef.

And there will be a Schnapps Bar--something BierBeisl addresses on their site:

Many people have asked us why we would have a Schnapps Bar - and the answer is you have never had Austrian Schnapps. An Eau de Vie produced from only the finest fruits harvested by Austrian farmers, keeping an old family tradition from being forgotten. Trust us, you’ll love it. (We’ll be more than happy to call you a taxi after dinner.)

For dessert, we're assured plenty of chocolate. And vegan and veggie diners, there will be a number of offerings on the dessert menu, too.

Psst: If you wear your lederhosen, the first drink is on the house.

BierBeisl is slated to open February 27.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
