Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

We're on the verge of making Southern California cheeseburger history!

What a journey it’s been.

At LAist we've spent the past several weeks searching for SoCal's favorite cheeseburger, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the cheeseburger. You've given us hundreds of suggestions and voted thousands of times.

We've whittled down the entries in the LAist Tournament of Cheeseburgers from the Burger Round of 32, to the Savory 16, and last week, to the Tasty 8 contenders.

It’s been week after week of intense competition — with ultra-passionate fans voting for their favorite spots, and taking to social media to lobby others to do the same.

But now it's time for the final round. And I’m thrilled to present to you the Flavorful 4, who will now vye for a chance to take home top honors at our event on July 7.

The Flavorful 4

It was a close, close count, with a handful of votes in some cases making the difference between moving on and staying put.

Unfortunately, it also means we've had to let go of some crowd favorites.

That includes Yellow Paper Burgers, the roving Los Angeles burger pop-up and Yuca’s, a mom-and-pop Mexican spot in Pasadena and Los Feliz that's become known for its burgers. Both businesses had waves of community support.

We also bid farewell to worthy competitors Proudly Serving in Hermosa Beach and Hammer Burger in Santa Ana.

You all fought a hard fight — as did your loyal fans.

So what’s next?

Now we have the Flavorful 4, we need to crown the ultimate winner (and identify second, third and fourth place).

That means it's voting time again! (Last time, we promise). Use the form below to let us know who you think should get the ultimate recognition. You have until 1 p.m on Thursday, June 20 to get your votes in.

After that there will be a few more weeks of suspense.

We'll keep the results close to our chest until Sunday, July 7, when we'll reveal the winner in an oh-so-grand ceremony at our free family-friendly event at Smorgasburg L.A. Consider this your invitation.

And for those forlorn at having lost your favorites, we've invited all our Tasty 8 contenders to the event, so plenty of cheeseburgers will be had that day!

Mark your calendars, we hope to see you there!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
