Does the L.A. County Fair Need These Deep Fried Samoas?

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

That's a silly question to ask, isn't it? Of course we need more deep fried goodness -- especially if it has anything to do with Girl Scout cookies.

Over in Dallas, they've created a deep-fried Samoa cookie to celebrate the Girl Scout's 100th anniversary. This sure beats the deep-fried cereal and SPAM we heard about last month.

"Christi Erpillo, a deep-fried food veteran at the fair and a former Girl Scout, decided to take up the challenge. The Thin Mint wouldn't survive the fryer, but the Samoa could," says HuffPo.

Only problem is, Erpillo's cookies, which have been encased in won ton wrappers in order to ensure a melt-free fry, will only going to be at the Texas State Fair -- or until Chicken Charlie figures out a way to bring them to SoCal's festivities. In the meantime, we'll just have to stick with Samoa treats close to home, like Bake You Happy's Samoa cupcake (pictured below), a chocolate cake base topped with browned buttercream, toasted coconut and a drizzle of caramel.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
