Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The weekend is so close you can practically taste it. Here are the edible events going on in the next few days to keep you occupied—and sated, for that matter.

Free Ice Cream From Postmates: If youlove ice cream as much as we do, you'll dig this one. In celebration of National Ice Cream Day, Postmates is offering free Ice Cream On-Demand throughout the weekend. They're delivering free pints of Haagen-Dazs, Ben & Jerry’s, and other local brands if you download their app. All you need to do is open it up, find the Free Ice Cream On-Demand icon, select your flavor (chocolate, vanilla, or Postmates pick), and then wait for your delivery. Not a bad deal. Oh, and don't forget Uber is doing ice cream delivery today, too. You can find out more info on Postmates here and Uber here.

626 Night Market: The oh-so-popular 626 Night Market is back both Friday and Saturday in Santa Anita, offering up Pan-Asian fare like Hong Kong-style egg waffles, Boba milk teas, Filipino-inspired fusion food, Taiwanese crepes, stinky tofu, Indonesian fried noodles, Chinese donut sticks, and much, much more. There will be over than 200 vendors slinging food as well as crafts, games, music and other forms of entertainment. Admission is $3, parking is free, and food and drink are priced a la carte. Hours are 4 p.m.-1 a.m. both evenings. You can find out more info on their site here.

Fairfax Summer Kick-Back: Lindy & Grundy butcher shop will participate in the Fairfax neighborhood's block party this Sunday starting at 3 p.m. and kicking 'til 8. The event will feature music, BBQ, coffee, and cocktails, including Lindy & Grundy's hamburgers, bratwurst with grilled onions and mustard, adobo-marinated brick chicken, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, elotes and more. There is no cover for the event and parking is free. You can find out more info on their Faceobok page here.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
