Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The weekend is so close you can practically taste it. Here are the edible events going on in the next few days to keep you occupied—and sated, for that matter.

Free Danish Breakfast At Copenhagen Pastry: If you're into awesome laminated dough and authentic Danish pastries like spandauer, kringle, and mazarin, then you'd better head over to Culver City's Copenhagen Pastry on Sunday, June 8. They will be hosting an open house in their parking lot, complete with the aforementioned pastures, as well as fresh-baked rye bread topped with Nutella, havarti or salmon, and coffee and juice. The party goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can find out more info here.

Plan Check Bar + Kitchen Cooks For A Cure: On Sunday, June 8th, the Fairfax location of Plan Check will host an all-star chef event that will help benefit pancreatic cancer research. Executive Chef Ernesto Uchimura will be joined by “Top Chef” champ Michael Voltaggio, Chef Josef Centeno of Baco Mercat & Bar Ama fame, and more. To help wash things down, there will be signature cocktails from Steve Livigni, Pablo Moix and Matthew Biancaniello, beers from the Golden Road Brewery, wine, passed punch, and a silent auction. Admission is $200 and donations for those who cannot attend are being accepted. You can find out more info here.

Maharlika Pop-Up: If you've ever lamented over why there aren't more high-end renditions of Filipino food here in L.A., the answer to your prayers comes this weekend with the Maharlika pop-up this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. Chef Chris Oh of EscaLA restaurant will team up with New York's Maharlika Filipino Moderno and Jeepney Filipino Gastropub to bring elevated eats straight from the streets of Manila to the masses. The event will be held at Escala during both brunch and dinner service. You can find out more info here.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
