The Food Pyramid Has Been Abandoned. Say Hello To MyPlate.
Another great pyramid has been lost to the sands of time. Wave goodbye to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s iconic "food pyramid" and say hello to MyPlate, a new campaign pushing nutrition via a highly simplified, Simon-esque pie chart.
Fruits and veggies take up half the plate with a quadrant left over for protein and another for grain. "Gone are the old pyramid's references to sugars, fats or oils. What was once a category called 'meat and beans' is now simply 'proteins,' making way for seafood and vegetarian options like tofu," notes NPR. The circle annex next to the plate is reserved for dairy. The cheese always stands alone.
Said first lady Michelle Obama today as she introduced the new graphic of the MyPlate campaign, "Parents don't have the time to measure out exactly three ounces of protein...We do have time to look at our kids' plates."
