Hours Before His Death Cory Monteith Told 'Glee' Director: 'I Am Feeling Fantastic'

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Yesterday at noon the body of Glee actor Cory Monteith was discovered in a hotel room in Vancouver. But in the weeks, days and even hours before his death, he appeared—on the surface at least—to be happy and healthy.

Adam Shankman, who directed several episodes of Glee, said that he talked to Monteith on Saturday morning hours before his body had been discovered. Shankman told CNN that he seemed to be in good spirits and they talked about having him come down to California to jetski. Shankman told CNN, "I had several interactions with him yesterday where he said that he was doing amazing. He even said I am feeling fantastic. I'm like everybody else, really devastated and confused by what happened."

Vancouver police have not stated a cause of death, and his autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Because of Monteith's history of drug abuse, there is speculation that he died of an overdose. But there were few signs on the surface that anything was awry in Monteith's last public appearances.

A photographer from TMZ took a video of Monteith and his girlfriend Lea Michele last month at LAX. Monteith had recently been released from 30 days of voluntary rehab. The photog commented to the couple: "You look like a million bucks"—and they did.

The pair were also spotted together at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, a nonprofit that raises money for homeless and low-income individuals on June 8.

Sophia Bush even comments that when she saw him recently in New York, he had seemed so happy:

Even before he went to rehab, Monteith didn't show obvious signs of using. This interview with the Glee cast was conducted before he went to rehab in April:
