New Beverly Announces Films for Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse Festival

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The New Beverly has announced the schedule for 2007 the Los Angeles Grindhouse Festival Grindhouse festival, which is this year programmed by Quentin Tarantino and runs from March 4 - May 1. Many of the prints come from Tarantino's vast and awesome private collection, reputed to be among the best in the world for such films.

As we reported last week, Los Angeles' best revival house will screen themed, handpicked double features on weekdays and (count 'em) TRIPLE FEATURES on the weekends.

Highlights include Rolling Thunder on March 11-13 about a Vietnam veteran who comes home to kick some serious ass; a trifecta of animated films on March 23-24 that includes Shame of the Jungle, an adult cartoon from France about an ape man whose girlfriend is kidnapped by a gang of giant penises at the behest of their queen, a 14-breasted bald woman; on April 11-12 the horror/sci-fi film Slithis about a mutated nuclear sea monster that terrorizes the denizens of Venice, California; a trio of swinging sexploitation flicks involving barmaids, pussycats and cheerleaders on April 21-22; and more kung fu fighting than you can shake a stick at.

ALSO… the New Beverly calendar mysteriously lists an April 5 "sneak preview" with the show time yet to be announced. Hmmmm… I don't think it takes all my powers of deduction to surmise that we're in for a preview of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's omnibus grindhouse double feature, appropriately titled Grindhouse.

Look for a big feature on Tarantino and the New Beverly's grindhouse event in the March 1 issue of the Los Angeles Times.

In the meantime check out the full schedule of films after the jump or on the New Beverly's Web site.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
