LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
What a hipster mime. Photo of via trustcandy on LAist Flickr pool.
Largo is simply a juggernaut this week with comedy (not to mention their Chuck Pahlaniuk speaking engagement on Tuesday). They've got some of the best stand up you'll find this week, and that includes Comedy is Dead being back at Hollywood Forever. Let's keep it short & sweet this week: hit me up to get listed, and get out to see shows! UPDATE: That hipster mime (named Django) has a website!
MONDAY 5/17
O.C. Comedy Competition, 8p Irvine Improv. This OC-centric stand up competition should bring some great exposure to some very deserving folks who may be underserved down there in the red county of Orange.
Todd Barry & Friends, 9p Largo. Tom, Al Madrigal, and Tig Notaro drop by for some great stories and stand up at Largo.
TUESDAY 5/18
TNT, 8p Sierra Stage. This improv showcase show runs all night and always brings the funnypain. This week features the debut of Mahogany, starring some serious improv badasses.
iO Harold Competition, 8p iO West. Local 132 v. Hot Toddy in the second round of the iO West Harold Competition. Awesome.
WEDNESDAY 5/19
Playboy Comedy, 8p Brea Improv. A stand up showcase show out at Brea.
Garfunkel & Oates, 9p Largo. Can these lovely ladies fill out the bigger and more expensive Largo? I hope they do, they’re pure comedy magic.
THURSDAY 5/20
Comedy Is Dead, 8p Hollywood Forever. Patton Oswalt, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Greg Behrendt, Natasha Leggero and others take stand up to the grave and beyond.
Sarah Silverman & Friends, 8:30p Largo. Sarah has Andy Kindler, Nick Kroll, and Aziz Ansari (working out stuff for his upcoming VMA hosting gig) in what should be an amazing evening.
FRIDAY 5/21
Dead Authors, 7p UCB. Paul F. Tompkins always brings great guests with him when this show comes around. No official line up yet, but the shows benefits 826LA so that should be enough reason to go support.
Amy Schumer, 8p Hollywood Improv. Amy is a great up and coming stand up who’ll be out at the Hollywood Improv for one show only.
SATURDAY 5/22
The Murrieta Gang, 8p bang Studio. An interesting concept show: a real family improvises on concepts that involve …wait for it… a real family. Maybe it’s too meta, or maybe it lets sassy kids talk shit to their parents on stage, who knows. Go find out.
Saturday!, Saturday!, 8p Sunset Gardner Stage. Robert Downey Jr., Jr. (the comedy group) hosts a night of sketch and improve at Sunset Gardner. This month has TAB, among others.
SUNDAY 5/23
The Status Show, 6p UCB. Kyle Kinane, Eddie Pepitone and others share the true stories behind their most cryptic status updates.
WonderDudes / Moon County, 8p iO West. Two great sketch comedy teams collide in one hour of comedy at the iO Mainstage.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
