Film Calendar: Cult Classics, Real Classics & Pirates

I said Caribbean Pirates, not Pirates of the...forget it. | Photo courtesy of Joe Penniston via Flickr
A fun bit of trivia for film snobs & martial arts fans: Jackie Chan's Supercop was originally released on laserdisc by the prestigious Criterion Collection . The Nuart pays tribute to this cinematic masterwork with a midnight screening on Friday. The New Beverly features fellow Criterion alum, Krysztof Kieslowski , with two out of Three Colors , and the Aero has yet another with a Citizen Kane replay. For Overlooked Auteurs , visit the Cinefamily for a deadly double featuring director Ted Kotcheff (who? Mr. Rambo: First Blood & Weekend At Bernie's , that's who!).
All right, enough prestige. The Art Theatre has drive-in classic Blacula , while Echo Park Film Center has Dino's Drive-In, featuring ultra-rare reels of silent icon Pearl White . Cinefamily balances out their obscure director program with two even more obscure shorts programs, 8-Bit Alchemy (think NES on shrooms) and Sects Drugs & Mind Control (you wash your body, why not wash your brain too?). REDCAT peels back the pirate mythos, melding frigate sculptures with the friggin' awesome for Caribbean Pirates , and Downtown Independent obliterates identity & sanity for Saddam-Hussein-impersonation-comedy Mr. Sadman & 16mm-Japanese-splatter-punk Blitzkrieg Bop .
