CD Review And Contest: Dean & Britta - Back Numbers

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

Luna crooners Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips add another cooing entry to their pillowy canon of waking lullabies with the release of a second, pseudo-side project album, Back Numbers (Rounder).

Soothing, cinematic, and effortless, they are both the sleepwalkers and the hypnotizers. Expect Britta’s belting on the Lee Hazlewood/Ann Margret classic, “You Turned My Head Around” to make you wonder where she’s been hiding that big ol’ voice (to use the Randy Jackson parlance of our time…), and Dean’s “this is how I sound don’t you just love it” matter-of-fact singing is, as always, unwaveringly stylish . Dreamy covers and original tracks wash together with Velvet goodness, making this record a pretty and sweet affair.

The duo played a live set this morning on KCRW that’s worth pulling up for a listen. As well, the two play back to back shows tomorrow night at the Silent Movie Theater that should not be missed, lest your mellowest desires go unfulfilled.

**ENTER TO WIN a copy of Dean & Britta's new CD, Back Numbers ! I have a friend who puts the same awesome Luna song on every single mixtape. Leave your guesses in the comments, and the winner will be chosen at random, even if you guess wrong. Contest ends Monday, April 9 at 4:00pm.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
