The Broad Museum Announces Opening Date And A Sneak Peek

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

After many delays, The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles, currently notable for its honeycombed exterior and Eye of Sauron, has finally set an opening date and announced a sneak peak. The Broad will open on September 20, and admission will be free to visitors who want to check out the contemporary art collection of philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad. The museum will feature 2,000 pieces of art since the 1950s all the way up through to 2012, including works from Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. On February 15, visitors can get a sneak peek of The Broad when they open the third floor gallery for two video and sound art installations, titled Sky-lit: Volume, Light, and Sound at The Broad. Tickets to the sneak-peek will be $10.

"It is our privilege to give this museum, the works in our art collections and a sizeable endowment and free admission as a gift to the people of Los Angeles," said Eli Broad in a statement.

Sky-lit will take advantage of the spacious, acre-sized third floor, and will feature immersive works from artists BJ Nilsen and Yann Novak. Nilsen's DTLA "draws on the aural environment of Los Angeles" to create a soundscape of The Broad's neighborhood. Novak's Stillness invites "visitors to contemplate the effect of climate and light on their physical and emotional states."

Tickets to Sky-lit are available at www.thebroad.org/skylit and are $10, including parking. The Broad is located at 221 S. Grand Avenue in downtown.
