DUI Checkpoints For The Holiday Weekend Crackdown

It looks like there's a major DUI crackdown in L.A. over this holiday weekend, so think twice before boozing and getting behind the wheel after all your holiday partying.

It may seem strange that law enforcement announces these DUI checkpoints, but really, research shows that the number of drunk drivers decreases when checkpoints are publicized.

"People having foresight aren't the ones who are committing this crime," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told LAist. "People who are thinking ahead aren't the ones that this checkpoint is likely to catch. I think that the publicity surrounding these things is so important that if you give a couple of locations, that's fine."

Here are the checkpoints that have been announced:

Friday, December 20

The first checkpoint kicks off in Hollywood at Hollywood Blvd. and Bronson Ave. from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

There will be a checkpoint in Van Nuys at Ventura Blvd. and Columbus Ave. from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Saturday, December 21

There will be a checkpoint in South L.A. at Western Ave. and Slauson Ave. from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The checkpoint in North Hollywood will be at Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Victory Blvd. from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Another checkpoint will be in Covina at 702 S. Citrus Ave. starting at 8 a.m. until an undisclosed time.

There will be numerous DUI checkpoints in other parts of town as well, but those times and locations have not been disclosed. Remember, it's never smart to drink and drive. Be careful out there!
