Today's show: Friday host Austin Cross, discusses a new cybersecurity break, advice from our moms, Food Friday, and changes to the Oscars.
College staple software Canvas is down after a hack
The topic:
A system that thousands of schools and universities use was offline Thursday during a cyberattack, creating chaos as students tried to study for finals and underscoring education’s dependence on technology.
What happened: The hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach at Canvas, said Luke Connolly, a threat analyst at the cybersecurity firm Emisoft. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or questions about whether the system was taken down as a precaution or because the hackers knocked it offline.
Why it matters: Canvas is used to manage grades, course notes, assignments, lecture videos and more. The hacking group posted online that nearly 9,000 schools worldwide were affected, with billions of private messages and other records accessed, Connolly said. The cybersecurity breach also comes as students prepare for finals.

Mama bear’s eternal words of wisdom
The topic:
Since the beginning of human existence, mothers have been dishing out advice, nourishment, and wisdom to their offspring. A mother’s touch, literal and figurative, passes through generations, and more often than not, that means a little piece of them sticks with all of us forever.
Join the conversation: We want to hear from you! What is the best piece of advice your mother has given you that sticks with you to this day? What part of her do you see in yourself? Give us a call at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com

Feature: New rules, new venue, new broadcast. Oh My! The Oscars are a-changing
The topic:
Last week, the Academy Awards released new rules for the Oscars. Some of the changes include awarding the director rather than the country for Best International Feature and allowing actors to be nominated for multiple films in the same category, such as Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress.
Other changes: Two of the new rule changes included explicit language about acting performances and screenplays being “demonstratively human” and “human-authored” respectively. These new rules come as the Oscars are planning for a change in venue and a new broadcast partner in YouTube starting in 2029.
