Topline:
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning as the first Santa Ana wind event of the season has arrived. If a fire breaks out, it could move fast, especially through mountainous areas.
Duration of event: Winds will peak midday Friday, calm down at night, and then pick back up on Saturday.
Fall heat: The wind event should wrap up by Sunday, but temperatures will remain in the high 80s to low 90s into the week.
Why this matters: Southern California's largest and most destructive fires are typically wind driven, as strong Santa Ana winds can make blazes all but unstoppable. We won't be in the clear until the rainy season arrives, which could be November or December.
