Cashmere: It's from the Boy Cow

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

LAist loves those LA County Fair commercials with the tagline: "If there's any place that could use a county fair, it's LA." Ain't that the truth. Where else can you see the wonders of nature -- like deep fried Snickers -- first-hand?

So which one made you chuckle more? Was it the commerical where a teacher asks her students, "Can anyone tell me what comes from a cow?" And they answer: "lattes" -- among other assorted Starbuck-type beverages. Or did the one with the Botoxified mother and her daughters out shopping (probably for My Super Sweet Sixteen) really hit home? At one point they ask the salesgirl, "Does cashmere come from a cow, too? The boy cow or the girl cow?" And the clerk responds: "The boy cow...with the tusks..."

Well, duh. Everyone knows that cashmere comes from rabbits.

The LA County Fair runs until Oct. 2.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
