Last weekend, I had a friend visiting from the East Coast, and we got out of town and headed to Meditation Mount, one of my favorite places near Ojai. The beautiful space — a meditation center and view that looks across the spectacular Topatopa mountains — was severely damaged in the Thomas Fire in 2017, and I hadn’t been up there since. The way they have carefully relandscaped and rebuilt amid charred land is an inspiration, a hopeful thing to see after everything we’ve been through in L.A. since Jan. 7. I hope you’ve found moments of reflection and places to explore as we move to the next phase of recovery here as well.

For more to explore, visit LAist.com where you can learn about how the L.A. sports community is moving on after the fires, join the IRL Movie Club for ways to see under-the-radar documentaries, and be inspired by the story of the Getty Villa workers who helped save the museum from the fires. Plus, grab tickets to see Paula Poundstone at the Alex Theater in Glendale in a special LAist live taping on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Creativity and science collide in this immersive experience from a team of researchers and artists around the themes of grief, loss, and human connection. The Dorothy Chandler reading room will house a multilingual “book,” available in five languages — English, Spanish, French, Simplified Chinese, and Korean — about two stars whose fates collide. At 4:30 p.m., Star Trek: The Next Generation and Reading Rainbow star LeVar Burton will be on hand to join the co-curators for an intimate conversation; the talk is currently sold out, but The Gift experience is open to all.

Oooh, this is one of those "why we live in L.A." events for me. A new exhibit on Alice Coltrane — jazz musician, devotional leader, and wife of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane — opens at the Hammer, and a special free opening night event is the best time to check it out. The evening will see the galleries open late for the show, Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal, and music will fill the courtyard. Flying Lotus — Alice Coltrane’s grandnephew, Steven Ellison (who knew?!) — will be DJing with special guest WEBSLINGER. The exhibit is on view through May 4.

Anyone else getting a deep feeling of wanderlust lately? Be inspired by travel expert Rick Steves in a conversation about his latest book, On the Hippie Trail: Istanbul to Kathmandu and the Making of a Travel Writer. In it, Steves explores some of the unlikely places he has traveled in his vast career and gives a personal look at his professional journey. He also takes on why he believes travel is a “political act.”

And in case you missed it, Steves joined host Larry Mantle on LAist's AirTalk last week.
