Mysteries are the best kind of summer reading, quick to get through and gripping. Don’t even try to talk to me if you see me at the pool with a novel, I won’t hear you.

If you’re also a fan of whodunit storytelling, this week there’s a talk with writers Michael Connelly, Laurie R. King, and Walter Mosley you won’t want to miss at the Skirball. And if you prefer your mystery in stage format, the play version of Clue just opened at the Ahmanson.

For indie music fans, there’s also an Elliott Smith tribute show at the Regent, surfers will want to head down to watch the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, and foodies will delight in a mix of chef-driven events, including a James Beard Foundation tasting at the Line Hotel and the World Taste festival in Anaheim.

Visit LAist.com for more to explore, including food editor Gab Chabrán’s hot take on why the area’s best tacos can be found in Whittier, a tour of Anaheim’s Little Arabia, and the latest on the push for East L.A. cityhood.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else.
