3 Girls Stabbed To Death, Mother Found Naked And Holding Knife

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

A 30-year-old mother was arrested Tuesday after authorities found her naked and holding a knife next to her three young daughters who had been stabbed to death in their home in an unincorporated area of Torrance.

Deputies arrived at the 1000 block of West 223rd Street after they received a rescue call around 5:10 p.m. Family members at the scene told the deputies that "a mother had killed her children," according to a statement from the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept.

Authorities told KTLA that they found the three girls, ages 3, 2 and 2 months old, in a pool of blood in bed with their mother, Carol Coronado. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

"There was a lot of blood," Lt. Dave Coleman told the L.A. Times. "It was a pretty substantial scene inside the residence."

Investigators found several knives at the home and are investigating if there were more causes to the children's deaths.

Neighbors said the children's grandmother visited Coronado's home and discovered the grisly scene after she received a call from her daughter earlier that day saying she was going crazy. The father was at home at the time but was working outside, fixing his car.

Coronado was arrested and taken to the local hospital for examination and then to Carson Sheriff’s Station where she was booked on suspicion of murder.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else.
