Pencil This In: Readings on 'Independence' and Renegade History, Wine + Jazz Tuesdays
Independence Day celebrations continue—in a literary sort of way—at the Annenberg Beach House and at Vroman's in Pasadena. It's also Tuesday, that means it's wine and jazz night at Hollywood & Highland. Read on for more details.

The Annenberg Beach House presents Writings on Independence, an evening with the New Short Fiction Series tonight from 6:30-7:30 pm. New fiction by Ron Burch, Andrew Roe and A.R. Taylor will be read by Lorraine Michaels, Sally Shore and Robert Standley. The evening promises comedic and dramatic works on the theme of Independence. Reservations recommended.

Tonight at 7 pm, the Hammer Museum screens the documentary, How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? The film explores “the passions and influences” of British architect Norman Foster. The architect will be in attendance to discuss the inspirations for his designs, including the Beijing Airport, the Reichstag and the world’s tallest bridge in Millau, France. Free. Parking available under the museum for $3 after 6 pm. If you get to the museum a little early, be sure to check out the Disassembled String Ensemble at 5 pm. Led by musician and sound curator Jessica Catron, the quartet will attempt to perform together while interspersed around the museum’s terraces.

Vroman’s continues on the patriotic theme tonight at 7 pm with Thadeus Russell, who’ll discuss and sign A Renegade History of the United States. This history book with a twist examines origins of American freedom from the perspective of on the fringes of society. “From drunken workers who created the weekend, to prostitutes who set the precedent for women's liberation, and criminals who pioneered racial integration, these accidental revolutionaries are the pioneers of personal freedom who challenged some of the very heroes in our history books.”
WINE+JAZZ
The 9th Annual Summer Jazz Series continues tonight at Hollywood & Highland from 7-9 pm. There’s a free concert with Chuck Berghofer's Midnight Jazz Band, and a $10 donation to Project Angel Food gets you two glasses of wine and an assortment of gourmet cheeses, crackers and fruit to enjoy during the performance.
