  • Hundreds of people rally over immigration raids
An image shows people standing in a street holding different colored signs. A lower-third bar at the bottom of the image reads "growing protests against ice raids."
Around 200 protestors rallied outside the Santa Ana Federal building Monday afternoon.

    Topline:

Around 200 protestors gathered outside the Federal Building in Santa Ana this afternoon after multiple raids were reported in the city.

What do we know? Federal agents were seen shooting objects into the crowd, according to our partners at KCAL News.

A Santa Ana police spokesperson said the department is monitoring the protest and described demonstrators as “peaceful.”

Why now: Federal agents were reported detaining residents today at several locations in Orange County, including Santa Ana and Fountain Valley.

Growing demonstrations: The protest in Orange County joins a growing movement against immigration sweeps, including the demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles. Since Friday, protestors have engaged in confrontations with authorities in L.A., Paramount and Compton.

What officials are saying? Santa Ana Councilmember Jessie Lopez told LAist that participants are expressing their frustration against the Trump administration.

“Everything was peaceful and then the federal agents started shooting at the crowd,” Lopez said. “There's that violence that's being perpetuated against our constituents with the expectation, of course, that our constituents are not going to respond.”
