    Officials are investigating potential pipe bombs in Torrance after a former student at Switzer Learning Center allegedly stabbed three staff members and indicated to authorities he placed two bombs in the area, according to police.

    Why now: The former student is accused of stabbing three staff members and attempting to stab a fourth at the school around 8:15 a.m. Monday. The former student allegedly made comments while being taken into custody indicating he placed two pipe bombs around the intersection of Amapola Avenue and 208th Street, according to the Torrance Police Department.

    Why it matters: People are urged to avoid the area while a bomb squad with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department investigates.

    The backstory: Two of the staff members were being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Harbor General Hospital, while the third was treated on the scene.
