  • Sick kids and staff can now come to school masked
    Cimarron Ave Elementary School
A student at Cimarron Avenue Elementary School in Hawthorne on the first day back from winter break on Jan. 8, 2024.

    Topline:

Students and staff in the Los Angeles Unified School District who test positive for COVID-19, but do not have symptoms, are no longer required to stay home. But they will have to wear a mask at school for at least 10 days.

What if you feel sick? Students and staff with symptoms who test positive must stay home and isolate. They can leave isolation once they’re fever-free for 24 hours without the help of medicine. “Symptoms such as shortness of breath and cough should also improve before going back to a school site,” the new guidelines state.

Why now: LAUSD updated its policy to align with the most recent guidance from the California and Los Angeles County departments of public health.

Get tested: LAUSD families can get free at-home COVID tests from their child’s school and upload the results to the Daily Pass app.

Who’s sick? When students and staff report COVID-19 test results to the district, it’s posted online. As of Jan. 25, the L.A. County Department of Public Health is investigating outbreaks of three or more cases at 1.2% of schools.

    How will this policy work?

LAist reached out to LAUSD to find out how the district intends to ensure consistency in how its protocols are followed; whether the district will ensure masks are provided; and how the district will safeguard high-risk students. In response, the district noted that it follows county guidelines, and pointed us to its website.
