East Hollywood's Unfinished Target Wins Major Victory

East Hollywood may now get its Target, after all! The
unfinished Target
at Western Avenue and Sunset Boulevard has been stuck in a state of limbo since
a judge ordered construction to stop
in August of 2014. The major problem was that the Target is 74 feet tall, while the existing height limit for commercial buildings in the area was only 35 feet tall. The L.A. City Council approved the Target in 2012 despite the discrepancy.
Today, the Planning Commission decided to amend zoning rules to set up a limited area allowing commercial projects up to 75 feet tall, City News Service reports.
Now that all that height business is out of the way, the Planning Commission has also recommended moving forward with the project. Future discussions about the Target will surround the store's potential benefits, including job creation and convenience for its neighbors. Other changes to the store to be considered include how close the location is to bus lines and the Metro Red Line, including possible bike-sharing options.
The L.A. City Council will weigh in next.
