Virtual Happy Hour: Brats and Beers on a Budget at Bierbeisl

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Most Angelenos are probably more familiar with chef Bernhard Mairinger's Austrian counterpart (and BH neighbor) Wolfgang Puck. But that will change, especially if his restaurant Bierbeisl keeps wowing the crowds as it has since its opening. And just this past week, he brought in a a 14- year-old wunderkind to cook in his kitchen, making it even more buzzy.

But you shouldn't let all the buzz -- or the zip code -- deter you. Sure, Mairinger's comforting Austrian fare doesn't come cheap. But there are ways to skirt such things, like their happy hour, which offers $7 sausages and 10 oz. draft beers.

The HH launches today, and will go from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday from here on out. You can pick from some of the unique sausage options, like the käsekrainer made with Swiss cheese, or the more traditional bangers like the cabanossi or weiswurst. The meats are served with spicy whole grain mustard and freshly grated horseradish.

All of the sausages are made up in Glendale at Schreiner's Fine Sausages with chef Mairinger's recipes. And they go perfectly with the Austrain beers on tap. Your server can help steer you in the right direction, but if you're feeling more independent, there are suggestions next to each link on the menu.

The best part about this new happy hour special is that you can get out of Bierbeisl spending under $20 -- that is of course, if you can resist the temptation to order a glass or two schnapps. We weren't so strong.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
