One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Boy oh boy, after all of the depressing news today, we could sure use a drink -- and a stiff one at that. One Eyed Gypsy delivers with their Warm Dickens Cider, made with a hearty dose of Bushmill's Black Bush Irish whiskey and warm, house made apple cider.

We were first introduced to this cold-weather cocktail at The Minty's 3rd Anniversary Party and Hot Bartender competition this week. (For the record, Jeremy Lake of Playa and Rivera took the prize home, and rightfully so. Can you tell we have a soft spot for hot bartenders and hot drinks?) It's served in a Mason jar, which might not be the most logical vessel for a hot beverage, but it wasn't piping upon ordering, so it's not a huge party foul. And when you pair it up with some of One Eyed Gypsy's happy hour fare -- like the sweet tater tots ($3) or a fried Oreo ($1) -- you've got a seriously comforting combo. (Happy hour runs from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Arts District Bar.)

Of course, if you're anything like us, you'll be spending the night at home taking in family and friends as much as possible in light of the day's events. If that's the case, here's an excellent recipe for mulled wineto help keep you cozy.

[UPDATE: We've just received word that One Eyed Gypsy is actually closed this evening (12/14) for a private event. You can, however, drink til your heart's content at their bar this weekend, and for the many chilly winter nights to come.]

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
