Protesters Pepper-Sprayed During Vote on Tuition Increase at CSU

At a California State University trustees meeting today, protesters were pepper sprayed and arrested after refusing to quiet down when the committee took a vote to raise tuition by nine percent, reports the AP.
The meeting, which took place in Long Beach, had to be stopped and reconvened in a private room.
Protesters refused to stop speaking during the public comment period, and when CSU officials tried to keep them out of the meeting, the two groups struggled between glass doors until the doors shattered. Before they broke, though, officials sprayed the protesters with pepper spray and led them away in plastic handcuffs.
The protests dispersed when Long Beach police showed up in riot gear.

The final 9-6 vote means that annual tuition for CSU students will go up by $498, bringing the total cost to $5,970 each year.
