7th Street First to Get Bike Lanes Under New City Plan
After adopting the Los Angeles Bicycle Plan last month , the city is rolling out the first phase of the process, in which it plans to introduce bike lanes up and down 7th Street. Southern California Public Radio reports that the lanes, which are scheduled to be painted on in October of this year, will go from Catalina Street in Koreatown to Figueroa Street downtown, stretching 2.2 miles in total. Phase two will include more lanes in downtown, and finally a stretch will be added to Soto Street in Boyle Heights. Altogether, this initial rollout includes 5.4 miles of bike lanes.
Of course, someone is bound to be displeased, and in this case, that someone may be drivers. In order to make room for the bike lanes, 7th Street will go from two lanes for cars to one.
In all, the Los Angeles Bicycle Plan calls for 1,680 miles of new, interconnected bike lanes.
