Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Shakes Southern California

At 8:08 p.m. an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 was felt across parts of Southern California. The epicenter of the quake was 3.6 miles below an unpopulated area of the desert 30 miles due south of Palm Springs and 10 miles northwest of Borrego Springs. It was followed by a 4.5-magnitude tremor just 24 seconds later, according to USGS.
In spite of the remoteness of the "moderate" earthquake, readers have reported feeling the tremor from downtown Los Angeles south to San Diego.

The quake occurred about 100 miles northwest of the April 4 7.2 Mexicali quake. Earlier Saturday a 7.5-magnitude quake struck the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean. No damage was reported. Today marked the five-month anniversary of the January 12 earthquake that devastated Haiti.
Earlier this week a series of smaller quakes centered in Santa Monica Bay rattled the west side of LA.
