Art to Look Up to: Turrell's Skyspace at Pomona College

If you find yourself out in Claremont, specifically on the campus of Pomona College, it's worth taking some time to take a look up at the sky as seen through LA-born artist James Turrell's Skyspace.

As part of a global series of Skyspace installations, Turrell's "Dividing the Light" arrived at the campus in 2007. It's described as "a precisely designed architectural installation that heightens the viewer's awareness of light, sky and the activity of perception." Here Turrell:

has created an open, transparent courtyard space in which a floating metal canopy shades the seating area and provides a frame for the sky. During the transition from twilight to full night, lighting elements, programmed to change in intensity and hue as they wash the underside of the canopy, create the changing perception of sky as space, form, object, and void. A shallow pool centered beneath the opening to the sky mirrors the daytime sky and reflects a dark echo of the night sky.

The lighting is programmed to work in harmony with sunset and sunrise, during which time different illuminations are visible, and "every hour on the hour there is a brief (3 minute) chime of light." The public can visit Skyspace Saturday-Monday. Check out some video of the space after the jump.
