  • A new GPS unit installed on downtown DASH buses should help drivers pace service evenly on their routes.
  • Last Spring, the LA County Board of Supervisors supported changing the name of an Agoura-area peak in the Santa Monica Mountains from Negro Mountain (sometimes titled a worse racial epithet on older maps) to Ballard Mountain, named after the earliest known African-American resident in the Agoura area. That name change finally took effect after the U.S. Board on Geographic Names approved it.

  • Jeeez. A man is suspected of murdering three of his neighbors over a dispute out in rural Phelan in the Mojave desert.
  • A judge today expunged Mel Gibson's drunk driving conviction from 2006 in Malibu.
  • Nature is interesting: the 580-acre Horse Fire has been burning in Sequoia National Park since July. It was ignited by lightening at 9,100 feet elevation. "Fire is a natural process in the Sierra Nevada," explained a press release. "Regular lightning fires limit the size and severity of subsequent fires and help to create a mosaic of diverse habitats for plants and animals."
