It has been all but official until now. Attorney General and former Governor Jerry Brown filed papers for the "Brown for Governor 2010 Exploratory Committee." The move allows him fundraise more aggressively as he decides whether or not to run for the state's top position.
The 71-year-old Brown, who already has raised more campaign money than Democratic opponent, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, may not decide to run until next year. "He's focused on doing his job as attorney general," a spokesperson said. "Second, he wants to be very thoughtful about this decision. There is no need to rush it."
In a brief statement issued tonight, Newsom said "we're looking forward to a robust discussion about the issues facing California and who is the best person to take this state in a new direction."

Here it is again since it's relevant. It's Brown's job if he wants it.

A new Rasmussen poll of California finds that of the two Democratic candidates for governor, Brown is currently much more electable than Newsom.
Brown leads all three Republicans.
Newsom trails all three Republicans.
Though the pollster's analysis suggests that this could change if Newsom were to actually win the nomination, given the state's Democratic leanings.
Brown (D) 45%, Poizner (R) 32%
Brown (D) 44%, Whitman (R) 35%
Brown (D) 44%, Campbell (R) 34%
Campbell (R) 42%, Newsom (D) 36%
Whitman (R) 41%, Newsom (D) 36%
Poizner (R) 40%, Newsom (D) 36%
It's too bad Brown never ran against Schwarzenegger. We might not be in the financial mess we are in now.
