Two Los Angeles County firefighters have been killed near Mount Gleason in the Angeles National Forest just south of Acton. Their vehicle went over the edge of the mountainside road amid intense fire activity around 2:30pm, LA County Deputy Fire Chief Mike Bryant announced at an 8pm news conference. The circumstances surrounding their deaths are still being investigated. Click below to listen to the press conference courtesy KNX 1070:
To update the stats of the Station Fire, 42,500 acres have been burned. That number will likely go up to 100,000 by morning according to fire officials. 18 homes have been lost, and the fire is traveling north towards Acton and southeast towards Mt. Wilson. Below is a map updated by the LA Times to show the effect of the fire:

According to KCAL9, the flames are coming perilously close to the transmitter towers on top of Mt. Wilson. While workers have been evacuated, the Mt. Wilson Observatory webcam is still functional and looking ever so ominous.

Are two dead firefighters enough to cover this non-stop? Jesus Christ, these stations.
Anyway, the Tower Cam site is getting hammered. Here's the 8:22PM pic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8579276@N05/3872631519/
Amen. We can all agree the coverage of this fire has been severely lacking by the local television media.
at the very least, local stations should have a continuous ticker scrolling with the latest info, evac areas and centers, school closings, etc. I guess local TV would prefer to declare ineptitude with silent yet reckless disregard for the public.
MICHAEL JACKSON CORPSE MELTED BY RAGING SOCAL FIRES. Going to commercial-free coverage...
it befuddles me with the amount of local news coverage regarding both MJ, Farrah and Ted Kennedy's deaths and the lack of it on most channels.
At least right now there is one station (KCAL9) which is covering, and currently showing a naaaasty flareup. And it's being covered by Larry Welk, who a day ago was fighting to protect his own house in LCF. Unreal. Disappointing. And completely unprofessional.
Ted Kennedy's death was actually news worthy unlike the other two.
i don't disagree with this at all. I was merely commenting that these were the most recent big issue - and a 66% fail rate is not impressive
The only continuous ticker that is going on is on 58 (KLCS) describing impacts to LAUSD schools. If KLCS can just put some text on, why can't any of the other stations?
I really don't get it. I mean what would happen if all of the sudden the winds started up? This just perplexes me.
Houses have burned down, residents have been injured, firefighters have died, major infrastructure is in danger now. It's just really irresponsible.
It's really hard to believe. In most markets, a beeping scroll breaks in when the National Weather Service issues a storm watch or warning. As MoJo remarked in an earlier thread, the FCC should revoke their licenses based on the public interest, convenience and necessity provision.

A bright spot has appeared. Is that fire?
