As mentioned yesterday, the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council has a motion before them tonight about making the Sunset Junction Street Festival free for all those who live in the three surrounding zip codes. LAist inquired with the post office on how many deliveries are made in the zips and here's what they told us:
90026
25,862 residential street deliveries
1,216 business street deliveries
831 post office boxes
90029
14,363 residential deliveries
1,169 business street deliveries
2,141 post office boxes
90039
11,980 residential street deliveries
940 business street deliveries
531 post office boxes
It's safe to say that even if this were to pass the Neighborhood Council, the street festival could not afford to let that many in for free, even if only a fraction attended, under the current economic model they say the event is run within. In a meeting last month, they offered free attendance to those who live in the blocks immediately surrounding the event.
The festival still does not have a permit and Eric Garcetti's office told LAist this morning that with the event only eight weeks out, it's "D-Day time," meaning the fate of it should be known very soon.

good ridden s to this for profit annoyance. MAybee I wont have to go out of town that weekend.
um, excuse me?... "the street festival could not afford to let that many in for free"
and why not? this was always a free street festival up until last year when the organizers hired goons to man the barricades and fences.
we seem to have forgotten the core origins of the SJSF
the organizers already charge the vendors and dentally challenged "carnies" enough money to participate.
I go to have fun, spend my money on food, drink, art and yes a game or ride or two but I'll be damned if I'll pay an entry fee. If the organizers don't know how to run this event then perhaps it's time to shut it down.
That is such bullshit. The entrance fee pays Michael McKinley's SALARY for the whole year! The problem here is not exactly a mystery, and the way to fix the "current business model" is pretty apparent.
Good for Garcetti for reflecting the wishes of the community, and let's hope he stands his ground.
