No longer are the days of checking Google Maps just for freeway traffic, you can now check the conditions on major streets. Have fun out there. As of 5:30 p.m., it's very yellow. Thanks, rush hour.

Oh my, this is handy!
Yeah, it is! But now comes the test of how accurate it is. I was looking at Porter Ranch it Tampa north of Rinaldi is yellow. Tampa, there, yellow? I'm not so sure.
My thoughts exactly. It's one thing to monitor freeways; and entirely different proposition to monitor residential streets. So how do they do that since CalTrans does not have sensors embedded in most community streets?

LADOT has sensors installed on MOST major streets throughout the city as part of their ATSAC traffic management system. As other commenters have pointed out, you can check LADOT data directly at their website.
How does it work??
thank you god!
I'm anxious to hear Google's explanation of how they're doing this. Now if only they can give you better estimates of travel times (as opposed to 45 minutes, up to 2 hours 50 minutes in traffic).

There is another site which is more specific to the area:
http://trafficinfo.lacity.org/
on the left side you can choose a specific area. A friend who has used it around UCLA says it's been very, very helpful, AND accurate.
Google Maps adds real-time traffic data
"According to Google product manager Carl Sjogreen, the data is aggregated from several sources, including road sensors, as well as car and taxi fleets."
City of LA has sensors. The data is from the same source as trafficinfo.lacity.org.
Caltrans is not the only agency capable of installing traffic sensors.
What's the "real time" lag on this function, I wonder.
its not working for me. waaaaah.
i just get the regular freeway traffic.
sadly this is no longer available
