Stolen U-Haul Involved in Car Chase Across City

stolenuhaulcahse.jpg A U-Haul stolen from Palmdale is currently involved in a chase with California Highway Patrol officers. It made its way through Santa Clarita and headed south to Downtown streets and then westbound on the 10 Freeway to Santa Monica. As of 4:!7 p.m., the chase moved onto the Pacific Coast Highway and into Malibu, as seen live on KCAL9-TV.

The driver is identified as a female, who can be smoking a cigarette (presumably), but no other information is known about her identity, according to police. She's taken the U-Haul up to speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour in the chase that has lasted over an hour.

The New Yorker called these chases "L.A.'s ultimate reality show." In their 2006 article, California had 7,321 pursuits with 5,596 taking place in LA County, according to '04 stats. A quarter of chases end in crashes and 15 people die on average in Los Angeles.

Maybe it's the same U-Haul truck that almost killed me last night at the intersection of La Brea and Santa Monica. Damn thing turned left in front of me as I was crossing the street.

glad you're alright.

its sad when thats a common occurrence for the select few that actually cross streets on foot in LA.

I love your play by play.. i dont have a tv here, but LAist is a good substitute.

Thanks. For some reason this chase fascinated me from the beginning. And it ended up being pretty crazy. Thankfully, it appears no one was hurt in this.

I'm also glad no one got hurt. Surprisingly the chase captivated me too! My co-worker kept going on and on about it and when he left, up it went on my monitor. Coming from San Francisco where we laugh at how car chases interrupt regular local TV programming in LA, I was quite impressed!

Wow, Susan Sarandon has really fallen on hard times.

damn...give me her booking number!!!..Jessica James!!

Hahaha I thought it was Britney!

Best one I've seen in awhile. At least she had a nice sunset ocean view before being taken away to the clink.

You know, as often as these things interrupt regular programming maybe they should be a reality show (we need a new word for this since "reality" shows are anything but). There will be a monthly contest. The winner is selected by a panel of judges (likely Sheriff's Office, LAPD, and Highway Patrol motor sergeants) with the following criteria for the "celebrity."

* Must not harm anyone
* Must not kill anyone
* Must make creative use of freeway on/off ramps
* Must display a certain flair for TV appearances
* Must surrender to officers when cornered
* Extra points for "runway" style perp walks.

The winner gets an all expense paid lawyer and catered meals in jail.

Excellent coverage. Great for displaced LA people like me. Hope you do this with future chases!

Has anyone ever seen one of these drivers emptying out a box of nails or throwing some banana peels out the window during the chase?

New rule.

* Contestants get extra points for throwing pointy slippery stuff out the window at cops.
