Gays are Too Controversial for Families, Says ABC7

During and after the inauguration yesterday, these ads showing gay families acting like any happy family would act aired in 42 of the 58 counties in California on stations and during shows such as Good Morning America, The Today Show, CNN and FoxNews.

That number would have been 43, but KABC7 in Los Angeles said it was "it was too controversial to air during the Inauguration, since 'many families will be watching,'" according to Chris Yokogawa, a media buyer who tried to purchase the airtime with the local affiliate for the nonprofit GetToKnowUsFirst.org.

It's no surprise that KABC7 would think this is "controversial." After the September 12th Chatsworth train crash that left 25 dead, including the gay engineer, ABC7 news one night at 11 p.m. reported that engineer's ex boyfriend--who committed suicide years before--was just his "roommate," leaving out the whole point of why the story surfaced. In a profile about Metrolink engineer Robert Sanchez, the LA Times found that he led a more solitary and private life after the death.

The refusal to let the ads air is stirring more controversy in the gay community. "Yes. That's true. Many families were watching. And seeing homosexuals on TV can give families AIDS, so really, it's obvious that ABC made the right decision," huffed mattymatt, a SFist contributor and organizer of Stop8.org.

Too controversial to Air in LA? Bullshit. I call a boycott and active disruption of KABC7. If you see their cameras stand behind the reporter give the camera the finger for as long as possible. Make signs denouncing KABC7. Yell. Make noise. Fuck this shit. KABC7 has pissed me off.

I like this idea of giving ABC7 cameras the finger...all on live TV, disrupt their reporting.

Such BS. I'd boycott them, except I already don't watch their crappy channel.

BOO ABC7!!! Boycott begins now fo' reals!

These commercials should of been on air before the November election though. Perhaps we would of saw a different outcome?

"And seeing homosexuals on TV can give families AIDS" LOL! :P

I've been following ABC 7 on Twitter for months, ever since they started covering Prop 8. I sent them a tweet asking them about this but I haven't heard anything back from them. Before boycotting them I want to give them the chance to explain this, and hopefully do something the employee that made this decision.

Their Twitter feed is here, if anyone else feels like asking them WTF: http://twitter.com/abc7

Be nice to the ABC7 person I twitter, I doubt it's the same person that made this decision about the commercials.

Local news is so shitty.

The reason people think gay families are strange and alien is because they aren't EXPOSED to them enough. Throw 'em in society and act like they're as good as every other family and people will start to see them as "normal." Why is a loving gay family "inappropriate" for children to see? What if they have friends at school with gay parents? What if said child turns out to be gay? Thinking their lifestyle is wrong, and that they have no chance at a happy family life can cause great emotional anguish, to say the least.

Hell, gay families are a hell of a lot more wholesome than Sarah Palin's brood of trailer trash which she paraded in front of the cameras for months. Most gay couples have to fight for YEARS to either be allowed to adopt or to find a surrogate.

Exposed?!? Hmmm...a different choice of word might be called for. I can just 'see' KABC considering 'exposing' gays to the public. OMG!!!

Seriously though. Who runs that shit-house?

I'm curious if this is an isolated ABC7 decision, or an ABC networks decision, or a corporate teet Disney decision.

Ok, I gave them a day to reply to me, and it didn't happen so the boycott is in effect for me as well. It's a shame, because following them on twitter was convenient. Hopefully one of the other stations, or the LA Times, steps in to piss on ABC 7 for this.
