Vice President-Elect Joe Biden has a new puppy.
Look at it. So. Adorable.
The German Shepherd, which came directly from a breeder, remains nameless at the moment, but if Biden follows in our footsteps, he'll name the pup Lucky, which is the most popular name for the third most popular breed in Los Angeles County, according to the LA Times' "L.A.'s Top Dogs" database.
With 51,782 registered German Shepherds in the county, the largest concentration of them reside in Palmdale and Lancaster of Antelope Valley.
President-Elect Barack Obama has yet to choose what kind of dog he will bring to the White House, but he will have to soon, as promised to his daughters.

I'm hoping the Obama's get a hairless Chinese Crested.
Rescued greyhound.
Biden bought from a breeder, not cool.
Joe Biden got his puppy from a known PUPPY MILL breeder who committed fraud

Doesn't Biden know what a puppy mill is? Even Oprah did a show on these Pennsylvania puppy mills!
#3 - I don't know. Depending on one's situation, it really could go either way. If you exactly what you want, you might not be able to find the dog at a shelter. Just based on my own frustrating experience of trying to find a dog to fit my lifestyle and living situation, I know it's tough to find a rescue dog that matches your needs. It's great to adopt if you can, but worse to adopt one that doesn't fit your needs and living arrangement just for the sake of adopting one.
I still want to kill people who get designer dogs to use as purse ornaments, though. Urgh.
@5 - Petfinder.com lets you look up pets you want that are currently with shelters and rescue groups.
I'll be in the market for a Himalayan kitten at some point... but I'll be willing to wait until I can find one that's adoptable. Not because it's cheaper (pets are expensive - my current Norwegian Forest Car is on medication for his eye all the time), but because it's kinder to adopt an animal so few people want. That's the way my family has always found our pets and we've had a yellow lab (with papers) and 4 pure blooded beagles.
Biden was a bad pick for Obama.
He should have adopted. Trying to keep up with O town on the dog sitch.
Before you peta-nuts go all half cocked and try to burn Biden for getting a dog at a breeder/puppy mill remember, those dogs need love too. There is nothing wrong with getting a purebred dog, especially one as awesome as a German Shepherd. I'd say that is the perfect dog for him. Your not going to find a German Shepard puppy in the shelter.
Not all dogs fit everyone's lifestyle. I'm not saying purebred is the way to go, we have a Labrador Mix at home we picked out when she was four weeks old, I couldn't imagine my life without her and she isn't even a year old yet. I'm just a sucker for a Retriever, and we get along good.
Maybe he didn't find one that fit his lifestyle at the pound. In my experience sometimes rescuing dogs means inheriting someone elses problem, happened to me twice. I won't adopt another adult rescue because all I ever get is someone elses problems. I don't have the time or patience for that.
If everyone would understand that adopting a puppy is a lifelong commitment, we wouldn't have this shelter problem. I would go homeless before giving up my dog.
