Proposed Law Would Keep Paparazzi 20 Ft. Away

paparazzi_ordinance.jpgCouncilman Dennis Zine's, who created a regional Paparazzi Task Force this summer, has proposed an ordinance to keep paparazzi a modest 20 feet away from schools, hospitals and medical facilities when recording celebrities. Zine defines the prohibition for photographers and videographers taking photos/video for a "'commercial purpose" defined as the expectation of a sale, financial gain, or other remuneration. However, the celebrity or facility can give consent for photographs. But does 20 feet matter? With a long lens or a great zoom function, the product won't change much. What will happen is an easier walk from the door to the curb for the celebs.

Make it 1,000 ft. Those self-absorbed mother fuckers don't need that much useless attention.

Eh, there are legal restrictions on using telephoto lenses to invade private space. Like, someone can't stand on the sidewalk and take a picture of you inside your own home with a telephoto lens and then sell it because it violates privacy laws. The same might be true inside a school, but I'm not sure about that, since schools are sort of public property, though normally with restricted access.

Most celebs who are stalked by the paps ask for it. Like, they seriously call in their whereabouts ahead of time. And if they're in the hospital, there are ways of finding out other than photos of them going in and out.

Photography shouldn't be a crime, but harassment is.
