Prop 8 Protest in Long Beach

About 2000 Long Beach opponents of Proposition 8 gathered at the corner of Redondo and Broadway at about 7PM tonight, chanting and waving signs. Following prompting from organizers with bull horns, the crowd took to over the street and marched west on Broadway, headed for Alamitos Ave. (2 miles away) while being closely watched by LBPD as well as news crews from major TV networks.

I could feel it amongst the crowd on Wednesday night, this is history happening right now.

Big protest rally Saturday Nov.8 at 6pm in Sunset Junction. Info at www.afterprop8.org.

I love you, long beach!

There were easily 2000 people there. Perhaps twice that. It was amazing. Lots of straight people, too!

The majority of California may hate us, but we have a lot of support here in our own community.

only assholes vote yes on prop 8.
this is disgusting.
don't vote by your bible.
separation of church and state.

FYI folks, we don't know for sure about the LB protest, all we can see is that even your local media doesn't agree on numbers, but the SF protest is being reported on AP as only 1,000 people when it was more like 20,000.

Here's one of our posts on the matter, with photos.

It would appear that AP is taking an active role in attempting to minimize what we're doing.

Keep up the fight!!!

I found that LBPD was much less cooperative than LAPD. The LAPD was more of a facilitator in keeping everyone safe whereas the LBPD seemed to really want to control us.

There was a point where they closed off all four ways out of an intersection and ordered us to disperse and a standoff ensued. Then, they opened up one of the directions and we walked towards the beach only for them to close us off at the next intersection while a line of police closed in from behind. it was essentially a trap.

If they just closed off one direction, we would have protested ourselves out until we dispersed on our own. We weren't even disrupting any major streets and it sure wasn't rush hour.

I'm in Palm Springs, and there was a rally last night. It was a beautiful thing. The problem is, these rallies are in the wrong places. Palm Springs, San Francisco, Long Beach, Silverlake: all very gay-friendly places. We're preaching to the choir. These rallies need to be in places where people are heard and seen by non-sympathizers.

The rallies make me proud, but won't sway my opinion. I already voted against Prop 8. Go to the SoCal Bible Belt behind the Orange Curtain. Go to Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks. Burbank and Glendale. Go to Palos Verdes.

Don't forget East LA and Compton; Burbank actually had voted no on prop 8.

Galaxiekat, I disagree.

We are past the point of trying to persuade people. We tried that, and failed on Nov 4. We almost made it, but we failed.

Now isn't the time for persuading the haters. Now is the time to get our community back together. Show how a bunch of hurt and betrayed people still have overwhelming support from their own communities (which includes all orientations, races, ages, and religions).

Oh, and as for the Socal bible belt?

http://saddleback8protest.blogspot.com/

Will I see you there on sunday?

There were far more than 2,000 people there last night. I would put the number at closer to 5,000.

rdm24,

I can't speak for Galaxiekat but as her husband I can speak for our family that we really feel that the issue does need to be taken out from our safe zone and out to where the yes votes came from. Unfortunately that includes our beloved Eastside. This Sunday at 1:00 p.m. a rally is taking place in Lincoln Park, Lincoln Heights. Less of a drive than to OC but still makes the point- the Yes vote was wrong, and Civil Rights for everyone.

I'd be at the Lincoln Heights one but I gotta work. See you all in Silverlake tonight!

As I read your words, when you use words such as haters and bigots,it is you who hate and are bigots.

You deface churches, steal signs, because you have such hate for the peace of heterosexual lives. We need you, so we know how good we have it.

Homosexual relationships have higher abuse rates, higher infidelity, more drug use, more alcohol, and higher cases of suicide. Take responsibility for the people who need help and let them get it, instead of wasting your time trying to be fake heterosexuals.

How many gays do you know that want to have ses with the opposite sex or use the eggs or sperms of the opposite sex to have a baby or adopt a child conceive by a heterosexual act.

If you are so gay, why do you stillhave the desire for things heterosexual. Maybe, you are not so gay, but normal people with psychosexual gender identity disorders. Just maybe.

Do you accept polygamy, pedophilia, paraphilia, and incest or do you judge yourself as better than those people?

"truth"speaker... all research shows the exact opposite of the statistics you just threw out. Would you mind pointing us to your sources?

If you don't I'm afraid it'll just prove you're ignorant and further reinforce the proven statistic that the average education level for gay individuals is higher than that of straight individuals, especially those who hold baseless prejudices. That would be you.

By paul "truth"speaker... all research shows the exact opposite of the statistics you just threw out. Would you mind pointing us to your sources?

If you wish to refute my statements then it is on you to prove that you are not ignorant, and provide your statistics.

Alcoholism is a fatal chronic illness affecting the lives of 20 to 30% of the homosexual population (Ziebold & Mongeon, 1982). Studies have found that 35% of lesbians had a history of excessive drinking, compared to only 5% of the heterosexual women in the sample (Saghir, 1970; Lewis, 1982). Approximately 30% of lesbians and gay men are addicted to drugs (Rofes, 1983). The facts show that the homosexual community constitutes a high-risk population with regard to alcoholism and drug abuse.

The process of recovery allows you to heal by working through those feelings you have pushed down with alcohol and/or drugs. It is often said that when you have a substance abuse problem, your emotional development stops when you start abusing. When you medicate your feelings, you numb yourself from conflicts and reality. Once you decide to no longer abuse, those feelings and emotions will surface and may be overwhelming. Self-help groups offer a safe and supportive environment where people share common experience, strength and hope.

This article was written by Dot Wojakowski as part of a Challenge Grant, produced and distributed by McGill Student Health Services:

It is commonly believed that factors such as stigma, denial, alienation, discrimination, and the cultural importance of bars place lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals at higher risk of developing problems with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD). We do know one thing: many issues need to be understood and addressed by prevention professionals working with lesbian, gay, and bisexual communities before they can deal with the destructive consequences of ATOD.

I guess my facts are not baseless and are supported by my academic scholarships to UCLA and USC, my research papers, and my 147 IQ.

Since peopl like you, always try to visit ignorance upon religion, his more vidence for you. It maybe hard for you, since on a good day your IQ is likely 114 or less. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, so need to write and tell me that it is less.

The highest principles fo rour aspirations and judgments are given to us in the Jewish-Christian relgious tradition. Though religion may be that which determines the goal, it has nevertheless, learned from science, in the broadest sense, what means will contribute to the attainment of the goals it has set up. While it is true that scientific results are entirely independent from religious or moral considerations, those individuals to whom we owe the great creative achievements of science were ALL OF THEM imbued with the truly RELIGIOUS CONVICITON that this universe of ours is omething perfect and susceptible to the rational striving for knowledge.-Albert Einstein

I suspect that gay or straight, without religion will finding themselves lacking in wisdom, knowledge, and creative thought. However, it is necessary to preserve a sense of dignity for many gays, when they hold onto primitive notions of a gay gene. It would prosper their recover to sing the songs of pedophiles, "We are what we are, and that's that." We have rendered ourselves unto vile afflictions and we seek the unnatural use of the body. We enjoy not God's design and find no comfort in normality, since we are afflicted."

So, bring on your baselss prejudices.
