Ad Says Be a Republican, Put Sarah Palin in the White House & Let Gays Marry

This ad, from Republicans Against 8, is probably one of the more interesting Proposition 8 ads out there (compared to the official campaign ones). In November, Proposition 8 will be on the ballot asking Californians to eliminate gay marriage.

I think something just exploded inside my head!

I saw the name "Ward Connerly." My head just exploded.

Hhhmmm, there must be a few Republicans who don't have bibles stuck up their butts.

They're still voting for Republican candiates though. It's like wearing a condom while sharing needles. Kind of defeats the point.

obviously, I mean "candidates". I make myself [sic].

Well, the true definition of "conservative" is keeping government the hell away from personal freedoms. Which means the modern Republican party is nothing but a bunch of bible thumping hypocrites, for the most part (Sarah Palin definitely included). To me, "social conservative" = crazy repressed individual who is full of hate and prejudice. I can at least understand fiscal conservatives and the like.

People like this should join the Libertarian party, vote for Ron Paul, and then we'd have some really interesting politics in America.

With all due respect msmerymac, and I mean that sincerely, after 30+ years of governance under the philosphy you rightly decry, isn't it time to accept that in fact, conservatism is precisely what conservatives claim it to be? Politics isn't theoretical - application and action matter. If every conservative in the country embraces this stuff, at some point, I tend to take them at their word.

Anyway, the true definition of conservative is nothing of the sort. it's the same thing it always has been - protect the interests of the rich, keep undesierables in their place, and promote the right and correct religion above all others. This is just the latest version.

The point msmerymac was trying to make, I imagine, and so was Guv Ahhhnold, is that political parties aren't stolid in their ideals, they change. And just like they changed over time into their current form of hate mongering culture warriors who conveniently forget about their beliefs in small government and defense of personal liberties and freedoms... with enough people and enough discussion... they can change back. Hence, Republicans against 8.

Social conservatism = social communism.

Perhaps but I think a better case can be made that there's no point in being part of a political party 100% opposed (it its national platform no less) to gay rights if that issue actually matters to you.

And that's not even getting into the disingenuousness of this stupid commercial. Republicans act like political demographics has no real substance, it's just s game of rock scissor paper with negros and wimmens instead of scissors and paper. It didn't "take" a republican to do half of those things, it's just that a Republican happened to be in office when those things occured and they didn't veto.

The Republican party cannot possibly be considered the party of Freedom by any rational standard, or the word has no meaning. Frankly, if republicans like Arnie had actual morals instead of the preening self-flattery that masks their obsession with not letting uncle Sam take their money, they'd have switched parties long, long ago.

Which again begs the question: if they care so much about freedom and liberty, how is it that they continue to vote with and support the party most committed to ending it?

Meanwhile, it's time for "conservative" dissenters to stop lecturing people about what a true conservative really is, and put up or shut up. If true Conservatives really cared about liberty, then they'd stop voting for republicans and join the democratic party en masse.

Actually, Ross, the "culture wars" started about 20 years ago. I suppose you can consider the presidential administrations of the late nineteenth century to be more in line with traditional conservative thinking (small government, laissez-faire business attitudes), but they had their own share of corruption and issues. Religion hasn't traditionally been a part of the Repubs strategy, but damned if it hasn't helped them, huh? Working class Democrats from smaller cities and rural areas, rural farmers, etc have lost faith in the Democrats and flocked towards the Republican side. You could, I suppose, argue that the Democratic "support" for Civil Rights in the 1960s began the separation, but things like abortion weren't used as a wedge issue until about 1990.

I think "traditional" conservatives still vote with Republicans because they can't stand the alternatives - supposedly higher taxes and more government. Funny that Dubya has increased the size of government (Department of Homeland Security to name one) and government spending. He has, however, been pretty good to business.

Like I said, they should flock to the Libertarian party en masse.

It might make some people think that they don't have to adopt every measure being pushed by the Republican party establisment. I think that it would have been better if they had simply identified themselves as Republicans, and, then, urged voters to vote against Proposition 8. Everyone has to make his own choice as how to vote, but I find it hard to understand how any gay Republican could vote for this ticket with Sarah Palin as the vice presidential nominee. I, also, find it hard to understand how they could vote Republican this time when the differences between the two parties on gay and lesbian rights are very strong and apparent at the moment.
One would think that they would want the Republican party to reform and change in order to win back their vote.
