Welcoming Drew Doughty to the LA Kings

There's a new hockey player in town. He's 6' 1, 219 pounds, 18 years old and from Canada. Meet defenseman Drew Doughty, who was the Los Angeles Kings' 1st round choice and 2nd overall in the 2008 NHL draft.

Today, Doughty was found at the Los Angeles Kings Prospects Development Camp that started today. The camp is from July 8-18 at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. The camp is open to the public, so anyone can head on down. LAist Feautured Photos Flickr contributor Michael Zampelli headed down and shared these photos with us.

I thought the Kings were going without defensemen this year.

What I love about these action photos is the demonstration of skill and confidence they exude. It is exhilirating to think of the concentration and skill this young man has crafted for most of his life. That he can skate at such an angle to be almost horizontal yet still handle the puck without looking and hold his stick as if it's a spatula is pretty awe-inspiring to me.

I'm no hockey expert but I've been to a lot of hockey games and seen a lot of skaters. It seems to me that this guy has amazing potential. And, you don't have to be an expert to know that when you have a guy on your team who's the second best choice of all prospects in the NHL draft that's a pretty good pick. I'm looking forward to seeing Doughty live on the ice at Staples Center.

Haha, I asked that people hit the recommend button if they liked having Kings coverage on the LAist. Looks like they came through. ;)

Thanks, Kings fans! :)

Thank you Rinkrat for covering hockey. The mainstream media has totally dropped the ball on this. Staples Center holds 18,000 Kings Fans and the attendance record shows continuous sell outs even though the Kings were in LAST PLACE this past season. Clearly there is a base of passionate fans for this sport. Yet to watch the local news or read the local papers you would swear hockey in L.A. didn't even exist.
