New Orleans Sno-Ball Shop Chills the Valley

There's no better time to open the city's first New Orleans snow-ball shop than during a heatwave. Tucked between two of the many small restaurants in Sherman Oaks' restaurant row is Nola Ice, a product of two entertainment publicists with Southern origins and aspirations to bring the Big Easy treat to the West Coast.

A New Orleans sno-ball is the refined and more delectable version of a streetfair sno-cone. The ice is finely shaved (it really makes a difference) and flavored with basics such as Strawberry to specialties like Red Velvet to eccentrics including Mardi Gras King Cake. Owners Erin Earls and Jillian DeFrehn have brought a Louisiana staple to LA and boy, is it good. Nola Ice opens its doors on Saturday, June 21st at 11:00 a.m. (if you happen to be near tonight, there's a chance they'll be doing a soft opening)

How much does flavored ice go for these days?

$3 or $4, depending on size.

So perfect for this crazy heat wave!

No doubt New Orleans sno cones are good.

If I were to transplant a food though I think Cafe Dumond and their famous cafe' au lait and beignets would be a hit.

I suspect the owners of Cafe Dumond want to keep them only in New Orleans. I can't believe some one with deep pockets hasn't offered them big bucks to let them franchise Cafe Dumonds all over the US.

actually there are a couple Cafe DuMonde outlets outside New Orleans. One was in "UnderGround Atlanta" and another was in Las Vegas last I recall.

As for NoLA Ice.. thanks Zach! Went there yesterday after running errands.. and although I haven't had a real New Orleans SnoBall in like 9 years (since I moved from there). It was pretty darn close, just a lot more retail than your standard SnoBall.. but then I guess LA folks don't go for your corner SnoBall stand set up out here. ;P

Wild Cherry was most excellent and I do reccommend their Cafe AuLait flavor SnoBall. Good stuff. Definitely was refreshing on a 100+ degree day..

What a great little shop! Went and checked it out yesterday, and Erin was super nice. She noted that they were working on setting up a 21+ night. The pina colada, apple pie, and white russian are all highly recommended!

Glad you enjoyed! Nice idea about the 21+ night. They should definitely set up a Twitter account.
