A Big Economic Day for McCain in Santa Ana

mccain%20bus.jpgNo, not because he had a record-breaking fundraising day. In fact, McCain sent an email to his supporters asking them to donate to his campaign within the next week in order to make his 1st quarter fundraising numbers look sexy (OK, he didn’t actually say he wanted them to look sexy but it's not a bad strategy as a way to compete with Obama). He did, though, pick up the endorsement of former First Lady Nancy Reagan while in California. The two have been friends since Reagan’s presidency and the endorsement is expected to help coax the Republican base back to McCain.

But even sexier than fundraising and Nancy Reagan is McCain talking economics. McCain today addressed his reputation for not understanding economics by giving a speech on the current financial climate at a roundtable of small business owners in Santa Ana; the speech was immediately posted on the front page of his website.

On a side note, McCain apparently dug himself into a hole with an honest comment about economics not being his strongest body of knowledge. But these campaigns are like job interviews: every (good) interviewer asks the candidate about his/her weaknesses. Those that answer honestly have to be commended; they may not get the job, but at least they are mature enough to know and acknowledge what they can and need to improve. Since McCain answered honestly, he must show his interviewers how he has worked to improve and how he will continue to improve his economic understanding so that he is prepared to lead one of the world’s largest economies. And we as interviewers are responsible for judging him fairly based on past and future efforts on this matter.

That said, earlier this month, he announced Meg Whitman as the National Co-Chair for his campaign. In case you don’t regularly follow the Fortune 500 world, Whitman is the outgoing CEO of eBay, where she grew the company from 30 employees in 1998 and $4 million revenue to the current level of 15,000 employees and $50 billion revenue. Suffice it to say, Whitman has some economic experience that should prove useful to McCain. And, as the L.A. Times reports, she may be gearing up for a run for Governor of California after Schwarzenegger. Call me crazy, but 'Whitman' has a ring to it kind of like 'Clinton'!

I'm calling you crazy.

So-called CEO Govs and Presidents rarely pan out. You can't run governments like businesses, because government, fundamentally is NOT a business. Having a strong sense of financial acumen is a tremendous asset when you're growing an internet pawn shop. But the same fixation on growth and profit when applied to running a country or a state often means the very real, very important humanistic element gets left behind.

Is there a reason that LAist seems to be endorsing McCain? I don't see this kind of fawning daily coverage of Clinton or Obama. Really, two posts today about how amazing McCain is?

No endorsements of either side here. McCain is in California this week, hence the increased coverage by a writer focused on following his campaign.

Also, it might be lighting a fire under our writers who are following the Democratic race to kick it up a notch.

I see posts about Obama and Hilary nearly every day.....

dug himself into a whole

grendel20: The last post tagged Obama or Clinton was a joke post about Clinton and Obama, 10 days ago.

The last actual post about Obama and Clinton was March 13th, 13 days ago. 13 days ago is not "nearly every day," not unless we have a vastly different understanding of the word "day."

I'll anxiously await some real "coverage" of the election. How about the coverage of McCain parroting Bush's nonsense about Al Qaeda being tied to Iran, leading even his supporters to a virtual facepalm? I'll wait for LAist to "cover" that too.

Personally I can't retype the things that come out of BushCo's mouth (or the parrots') without becoming physically ill.

That bullshit just doesn't bear repeating in my opinion.

Get cable if you're seeking quote-unquote coverage :D

You mean Sen. John McBush?

Let's not bring sexy back this time.

I guess getting Nancy Reagan's endorsement is the next bset thing to digging up Ronnie's rotting corpse and try to get his.

All these comments are too funny...to claim business experience(i.e. being a CEO) as lacking credibility on the topic of economics for the nation is just flat wrong. Last i checked national growth comes from those businesses, not from as said above humanistic elements. These businesses, including set internet pawn shop, is what our nations economy is built on. And for that comment about Obama and Clinton not getting enough coverage on laist, heres your forum...If you have an issue with it, don't bitch and moan about it, leave a comment, preferably a constructive one, rather than a point and then a whine. Look, I'm not a republican supporter, but i also appreciate the fact that laist makes a point to post pro-republican articles as well as pro-democratic. So maybe if you have an issue with not enough posts for Obama and Clinton, post that on the next democratic post.
