There is some kind of hellish cold going around that's sent people from all over running to their doctors for a z-pack (to the uninitiated out that that would be pack of Zithromax, the antibiotic du jour these days.) But what if you're trying to stick it out and fight it off with a wing, a prayer and some echinacea?
There's always chicken soup (especially if you've got someone to bring you some to you!). There's also black tea with lemon and honey, hot toddies and even popsicles (good for the throat!). Some people insist that taking a bunch of Source Natural's Wellness Formula Herbal Defense Complex (available at Whole Foods) at the first sign of a cold.
Personally, I think that (if you've got the time), if you take a whole day and just take NyQuil every four hours and sleep, it does wonders!
So what's going to keep you out of the doctor's office? What's your cure for the common cold? (Especially now that we don't have Airborne!)

Ok I know that looks like chicken soup, and although it does have a chicken soup base, that is clearly matzoh ball soup.
Although my grandma / mom never put noodles in it.

i don't really think overloading on stuff "ahead of time" can prevent you from getting sick, because our bodies can only absorb so much vitamin c et al. of course, being healthy, hydrated, and well-rested in general helps people from getting sick, but if you're dealing with kids or sick folks or in a confined space, you're bound to pick up some germs.
i had that nightmare bronchitis-cold-flu the first couple of weeks of this year and it kicked my ass. the only thing to do was to drink liquids and rest. i find complaining helps a lot. (ha!)
also, not being a hero and actually calling in sick without guilt is important. your employer shouldn't want you there if you're sick, and you're only going to get sicker. people get sick, so take the damn day off!
that cold, though, has created an aversion to soup i've never had before. urgh, soup, no more!
Oil of wild oregano. It's gotten me through a couple of colds.
You got it right - Nyquil and a day of sleep does wonders, if it's a cold. If it's that nasty flu going around, nothing seems to work. Just be prepared for days of misery and a fever like you haven't had since childhood.
By the way, does anyone else think Airborne has the stupidest marketing slogan ever? "Created by a schoolteacher." What's next? Asthma medication "created by an auto mechanic"? Cholesterol-lowering drugs "created by a plumber"? Call me crazy, but I prefer my medications (preventitive or otherwise) to be created by someone who's been to med school.
