Planned Parenthood Accepted Racially Motived Donations According to a UCLA Magazine

Planned Parenthood Racism uncovered by UCLA MagazineThe Advocate, a pro-life student-run UCLA magazine, released it's quarterly issue (.pdf) this week with an investigative report on sketchy fundraising practices at Planned Parenthood. Their lede reads:

Over the summer, The Advocate investigated the financial dealings of Planned Parenthood and made some shocking discoveries about the clinic-owning “nonprofit.” We obtained the information by having an actor call clinics across the country and pose as a donor. The actor who called, The Advocate’s advisor, communicated to them a very racist agenda—the one that Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood’s founder, had envisioned. He then asked to donate money specifically for the abortions of African-American babies in order to “lower the number of blacks in America.”

Despite his bigoted requests, no Planned Parenthood employee (or director of development, in one case) declined the tainted money. Some even asked to speak with other employees to get permission. In the first day of calling seven clinics, not a single Planned Parenthood representative expressed outrage or concern at the racism behind donations specifically “to reduce the number of blacks.” In fact, some even went as far as agreeing with the antiblack agenda.

A video with audio of the phone calls is below.

An online news service confirmed that these conversations took place with the organization: "Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio confirmed to Cybercast News Service that the telephone conversation with a presumed donor occurred in mid-summer 2007, adding that it was not the policy of Planned Parenthood to accept donations specifically to underwrite abortions among minority women."

Transcript with Idaho representative: Autumn Kersey, director of development:

Idaho donor: The abortion—I can give money specifically fror a black baby, that would be the purpose?

PP Rep: Absolutely. If you wanted to designate that your gift be used to help an African-American woman in need, then we would certainly make sure that the gift was earmarked for that purpose.

Idaho donor: Great, because I really faced trouble with affirmative action, and I don’t want my kids to be disadvantaged against black kids. I just had a baby; I want to put it in his name.

PP Rep: Yes, absolutely.

Idaho donor: And we don’t, you know we just think, the less black kids out there the better.

PP Rep: Understandable, understandable.

Idaho donor: Right. I want to protect my son, so he can get into college

PP Rep: Alright. Excuse my hesitation, this is the first time I’ve had a donor call and make this kind of request, so I’m excited, and want to make sure I don’t leave anything out.

Additionally, Fox News 12 in Idaho obtained a statement from Planned Parenthood of Idaho: "Planned Parenthood firmly and unequivocally denounces racial bias in the delivery of health care.... A fund raising employee violated the organization's principles and practices when she appeared to be willing to accept a racially motivated donation. This employee made a serious mistake. We apologize for the manner in which this offensive call was handled."

This isn't the first time Advocate Editor-in-Chief, Lila Rose, has dug into Planned Parenthood's policies and practices. Last spring, the then 18-year-old UCLA journalist looked into Los Angeles clinics wanting to show that Planned Parenthood was not following the law regarding minors and abortion. Her interview with FOX News Channel's Bill O'Reilly is below (2nd one down).

But everybody knows that the best time to have a baby is when you're a black teenager!

"a pro-life student-run UCLA magazine"

"Cybercast News Service"

"Fox News' Bill O'Reilly show"

That's a wonderfully sourced story.

That's what I'm thinking torrmoz. I'm sure we'll see this on 700 club. It'll go halfway around the world before it's debunked.

No shit torrmoz!

Yes tormoz it was obvious photoshop

awesome misinformation, just awesome. not only the sources, either.

minorities have disproportionately low access to reproductive health services. while the above phone conversation is quite offensive to think about, planned parenthood does way more than provide abortions. they provide affordable reproductive health services to everyone..I'd imagine to more people than they do abortions on.

and am i missing something with the last video? as a minor in this state you have the same reproductive rights as an adult: in that even if you were 16 you do not need to notify anyone, nor can the provider notify anyone if you were going to get an abortion. the rape/sexual assault clause only kicks in if the person in question is 12 or under, or if the medical professional has reason to believe that the parents were involved. which, it seems to me from the video linked above (which is fairly scant from the video), that as a 15 year old girl it doesn't matter. and the whole statutory rape thing..don't even get me started. i think unless the age difference was extreme, half the time it's being used to prosecute innocent people by parents and/or the partner who was too scared to admit it was truly consensual because of potential family/friend backlash.

btw, the advocate should be relabeled "anti-choice", because in the end, that is what it is all about. planned parenthood isn't about abortions at all...I love to have that place open as a choice to me because it is cheap and accessible for reproductive services in general..I don't have to wait a month for an appointment with my regular gyno and I can get a lot of the cost subsidized by the government. and this is coming from someone who hopes to never have an abortion and would most likely not consider it (with the exception of rape).

Good comments, all. It's often disturbing to see what some fringe campus groups/publications put out there, but it's even more frustrating when the extreme gets over-hyperbolized and then run over again.

Zach didn't choose his sources here -- there were no other sources in this instance (at the time, at least).

Which is part of the point. Fringe UCLA paper breaks story of scandal at Idaho Planned Parenthood. Funny if it's the Onion, perhaps. Instead, someone at the "Advocate" probably just scored themselves an internship at FoxNews.

A couple of problems I see here;

It is illegal to record a telephone conversation, unless you inform the person that they are being recorded, before any other conversation occurs.

This means that unless these pro life people recorded these conversations, we have to take their word for it that the conversations even took place. And if they did, they record them unbeknownst to the PP staffer, then they broke the law.

Considering the other things I've seen pro lifers feel justified in doing to support their cause.

I think I want more proof than one of them saying; "Here's what happened, take my word for it."

Just to throw a wrench back at you jrb,

Phone calls can be recorded in most cases without the other party knowing under what is known as "one-party consent". As long as one of the two sides of the conversation has consented (ie the journalist) then it is legal.

If anyone is a legal expert on this matter please jump in here.

If you guys are pissed about jabs at pro-choice, direct some of your anger at JUNO...apparently, pro-life is as easy as whipping open the pennysaver...

Henry, cut amd paste this link,

www.callcorder.com/phone-recording-law.htm

apparently the one party consent laws vary from state to state.

Being one who for some reason went through an accredited j-school program, the one party consent law is nice, but here in California and most other states it's two party consent (tsk tsk Pellicano). Actually that's a great link, jrb, thanks.

When it comes to the Fox News phone calls, I generally picture Bill O'Reilly calling up some cheap $5 ho and demanding a scripted response to his liking. If anyone wants to fact-check O'Reilly et all at Fox, do you think he (or his bosses) care? No way, dude even said "I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama" last week with no repercussions.

Billo said he doesn't want to lynch Michelle YET. Presumably so long as she is sufficiently proud of America. I fear "patriotism" will be the "moral values" of this election.

Horribly off topic, I know.
