Trader Joes, based here in Southern California in Monrovia, made a big announcement today regarding imported food from China:
Garlic, frozen organic spinach and other "single ingredient" food items from mainland China will be phased out by April 1, although products that include ingredients from both China and other sources will remain. The company believes the foods are safe but "we will continue to source products from other regions until our customers feel as confident as we do about the quality and safety of Chinese products," Trader Joe spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said in a statement. [Business Week]
Earlier this year, products from China such as pet food and toys have caused alarm for recalls in the United States. Business Week also reports that Whole Foods Market Inc., Kroger Co. [they own Ralphs] and Safeway Inc. [they own Vons] did not immediately return their calls seeking information on their product lines. But Wegmans on the East Coast did stop selling garlic from China last fall.
For us, our favorite garlic from Trader Joe's is the Dorot Crushed Garlic found in the frozen section (those little cubes). It's incredibly potent and does a great job in soups and when sauteing veggies. Luckily, Dorot is Kosher and manufactured in Israel.

last time i was at tj's (two weeks ago), the frozen edamame was gone because it came from china. i miss it. hopefully they'll be able to find somewhere else to bring it in from.
That's why the frozen edamame was gone? I was silently weeping to myself for weeks. Then it came back and I bought three bags.
It is such a delicious and nutritious snack. I hope TJ's finds a new soybean supplier soon.
We have to source garlic from China? Don't we have a terrific supply just a few hundred miles North?
I've never once considered frozen garlic - the regular old cloves in the produce section seem to suffice. Maybe I'm missing something.
Give the frozen garlic a try. I love fresh garlic, but sometimes I'm not in need of it that often, so it's not readily available in my kitchen. With the frozen garlic, I always have some when needed.
Well, I DO like things that come in cubes...
Ditto on the little frozen herbs from Israel.
I think the main reasons TJ's has crossed off China:
1) All the bad press about adultered/poisoned stuff from China
2) China is basically one big Superfund site
3) China is about the worst place in the world, except maybe Liberia, to go on a business trip. Unless you like stepping in somebody's fat loogie several times per hour. It makes me shudder just to remember that.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Not my edamame!!!! Anything but that!!!!
Guess you'll have to get your edamame fresh from your local sushi bar...
I feel a bit ill thinking about all the TJ edamame I have consumed now - I really need to start reading packaging labels.
This is a good thing. Isn't this the same country that slaughtered all those dogs a few years ago? I don't think I want to be sourcing food from them after all.
