Extra, Extra: Checking Out, Checking In
- Jeffrey Lawrence Weaver was sentenced today to 40 years to life in prison for the killing of a man whose remains were left to rot in a Van Nuys storage unit. Weaver is one of two men convicted in this case. Today the "judge said he would recommend that Weaver never be released on parole" because of the extreme nature of the killing.
- The couple found this weekend dead of an apparent murder-suicide have been identified as the missing Monica Harris and her estranged husband, Curtis Bernard Harris. Harris shot his wife, then turned the gun on himself after kidnapping her and taking her to the motel in Whittier. Harris' car was left at the scene, leading police to immediately link the motel room deaths to her disappearance. Mr. Harris was due to begin serving a sentence previously assigned for kidnapping his wife before.
- Back on the chain gang, sort of: Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona returned to work today after a two month absence. His trial for federal corruption charges is scheduled for June.
- After a struggle with the police in Santa Ana, an unidentified man was shot behind a Wal-Mart last night. Police had been called to the retail megastore to arrest the man, who was wanted on other charges in Anaheim, when he fled and was then shot and killed.
- Early this morning a car struk a boulder on Topanga Canyon in Malibu. No one was hurt in the incident, although it's pretty certain no one thought to ask the boulder how it took the impact.
- The search continued today in the San Bernardino Mountains for 62-year-old Dean Christy, a retired Glendale teacher, who has been missing since Friday. He was last known to be in the Green Valley Lake area, but "San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said up to 3 feet of snow accumulated in the hills where Christy is thought to be lost."
- Upping the rainfall digits: Our recent rainstorms have done wonders to our numbers. Although the big tallies are to the north of us, the Hollywood Hills is reporting 3.62 inches. And isn't it all about how many inches you've got in Hollywood?
