Joseph Cosina was shot in the heart after bar-close early Friday morning at Crash Mansion nightclub on Grand Ave. (it was an 18-and-over event). The 19-year-old Downey High School graduate was pronounced dead at the hospital and two others were wounded. The gunman remains at large.
About closing time, a fight broke out inside the club, police said. Cosina and his friends had no connection to the fight, said his father, Hector.Security guards asked them to remain inside with the other patrons. But a melee and then gunshots erupted in the parking lot, and Cosina somehow was able to leave the club. From the club's balcony, his friends saw him running through the parking lot, perhaps to protect his car, his father said. -- LA Times
The 14,000-square-foot space at 1024 S. Grand has a rich history in Los Angeles. It first opened in 1946 as Myron's Ballroom, the local hub for West Coast Swing, or as Myrna Myron dubbed it, "sophisticated swing."
After evolving into a salsa club and later the conflict-riddled Grand Avenue Nightclub, the building appeared bound for demolition. About a year after the lot was purchased by a housing development corporation, it was rescued by NYC-based Bowery Restaurant Group, owner of Manhattan's Crash Mansion nightclub.
We heart you, blogging.la, but don't agree that this historic space "should have been long gone by now" in favor of twin hi-rise condo eyesores. Since opening last June, Crash Mansion LA has hosted a handful of concerts and events in its 1,200 capacity room (see these flickr photos). Hopefully this homicide was an isolated event and Crash Mansion will continue booking a wide variety of eclectic local bands and nationally touring acts without consequence.

This is a bummer. I went there a few weeks ago for the first time since it became Crash Mansion and it's a REALLY cool space. I hope this isn't the beginning of the end...
I've been to Crash Mansion before and think it's a great venue! I hope that they're able to pin down who the shooter is and that they can keep the area safe for it's patrons!
It is never good when stuff like this happens, but I have been in that part of downtown for years and I can tell you it is quite rare. I have also been to crash mansion a bunch of time and always had a great time. It is actually one of the only good spots to see live music in downtown right now, and I have even played there with my band and seen a bunch of my friends bands there and had a blast. I don't know what happened but I am pretty sure it is not going to happen again any time soon...
This is awful, that someone was shot in the parking lot- It's really sad that we live in the world that violence happens, this happened in the parking lot at Crash Mansion, I feel bad for the family and I know that Crash Mansion feels awful the whole purpose of Carsh Mansion going downtown was to build up downtown LA. sad!
