Let's keep it real for a minute - nobody uses Yahoo Mail for anything other than their spam accounts. You know, the email address you use when you're filling out surveys, commenting on blogs, or signing up for a message board. An email address that you don't check often, one that you don't mind getting spammed.
After Google's Gmail blew into town a few years ago it quickly became the defacto web-based email of choice. Meaning if you are still primarily using Yahoo Mail, it's because it's tied to your Flickr account, your Yahoo Fantasy team, or because you're one of those people who think your friends are too retarded to change their email address book if you ever, OMG, moved on with your life.
Yesterday Yahoo did the only thing they had left in their arsenal - to give it all away. Last night they announced that if you are using Yahoo mail, you will have as much free storage as you can handle, forever.
We'll be keeping our eyes out on those smartasses who will now use their Yahoo accounts to store their MP3s and Paris Hilton videos.

Yahoo mail is great, and WAY better than gmail when it comes to sorting out spam -- among MANY other things. Yahoo is not a provider for "retards" as you seem to imply. Many people who know how to compare pros and cons between providers elected to go for/stay with Yahoo, because despite their shortcomings and user frustrations, they're still one of the best.
yahoo's pros are what, exactly?
and i call BS on your claim that Yahoo has a better spam filter than Google - if you really believed that you would have put your real yahoo email address in the box, but alas you didn't.
you are either a ridiculously stupid PR wonk for Y! or a very clever one working for Goog.
Either way, in this discussion, if you dont have a dog in the hunt, you'd be best to use your real name and real yahoo address if youre going to try to pretend that Yahoo is even in the same league as Google in regards to email and email spam.
But please dont insult us with bullshit lies like your name, your false opinion, and your fake email address. Not everyones as dumb as you.
Tony: no need to insult others for their own (independent)comment/opinion, it just shows your lack of argument and how pathetic you are. My personal experience with gmail is that they suck. You don't like Yahoo? your call. Other people do. And they may not be as dumb as you think.
faker / liar,
there is an absolute need to insult others when they come into a blog simply to lie.
you came in here to say how great yahoo mail is at filtering out spam, but then you used a fake yahoo email address in your comment (nomail@yahoo.com)
therefore you outted yourself as either being
1. a paid employee of yahoo pimping out your shitty shit (that you dont even stand behind on a daily basis)
2. a shill of yahoo's pimping out their shitty shit
or
3. another in the endless line of dumbshit anonymous commentors who think they can lie in the comments of blogs and get away with it without anyone noticing.
you provide no reasons why yahoo rules, nor any why google sucks, but you claim both WHILE not trusting the email company you allegedly prefer.
and you wont even use your real fucking name to say Yes, I John Doe like Yahoo!
you're pathetic.
you are a liar, a fool, and someone who came to this blog to insult us with their bullshit. so step off and sell your shit to lamer blogs - they might be buying, but i doubt it.
go to a blog that's all about Making Money While Blogging, they might be foolish enough to go for it since most of them are still using their AOL email addys.
Wow, it gets better: "fake", "liar", whatever. So what about you, "Tony?" Are you on the Google payroll? Are you one of their "wonks?" You certainly sound like it. And FYI, not giving one's email on blogs such as this is basic protection against potential spamming/blogslappping (from people like you.) Duh. Your silly aggressiveness rather than serious argumentation shows how lame you are. Bottom line is: you don't like Yahoo, your call. Other people do. So what? It's called democracy. Ever heard of it? So, go get a drink, a puff, or get laid, but please: re-lax!
look, i dont care what email people use or why. all i care about is when people say things they dont lie. i care because i dont get paid by google, i get paid to run this blog. and one of my duties is to weed out and prevent the bullshit.
one of the easiest ways to identify fakers and liars is to watch them hide behind fake names and fake email addresses because theyre oh so scared of things like spam - even while in the same breath theyre pretending to endorse an email company because of its great spam filters.
quit while youre behind.
when did this site get so f**kin bitchy?
Actually, the latest version of Yahoo, adapted from their acquisition of a company called Oddpost, is quite good. It's easy to use and makes great use of intuitive features like drag and drop. Some people like viewing their mail as messages instead of conversation threads, or like the familiarity of the Outlook they use at work, and Yahoo works really well for them.
It'll also be interesting when the iPhone runs out -- Apple announced Yahoo will provide push IMAP that works with the iPhone out of the box. If trendsetters want Blackberry-style access to their mail with their fancy Apple phone, Gmail won't cut it.
In any case, I'm a happy Gmail user. I'm also a New Yorker who enjoys Gothamist; just visiting LAist while visiting LA. Based on Tony's vitriol calling visitors pathetic liars -- well, New York doesn't seem so mean after all. :)
now see, that was an excellent response.
however being honest isnt being mean. a lesson ive learned on both coasts.
I really use my Yahoo account for spam only!!
It gets 400 spam messages per day!!!!!!!!
